ABOUT THE BLOG

The Roots

I believe that art, in any of its forms should move us. For better or worse, it should stir something in the audience that evokes a reaction. Seen this way, art, through its different means, serves as a catalyst for emotional responses by assisting in uncovering feelings or thoughts that were already under the surface.

In undertaking this task my medium of choice has always been the pen. To me, attempting to string along a line of words carefully placed in such a way that they can conjure up a distant memory, transport the reader to a far away land, or perhaps simply dissipate their fear or loneliness through the recognition of a kindred spirit, is as close to performing magic as I can get. I use my poetry as a release, a way for me to transmute my own negative energy into something beautiful. Through the narrative I create, I am able to take back control and redesign the experience as I wish. I am a writer but through this process I become an architect.

This capacity has come in especially handy over the course of the last two years, as I went through several personal struggles that left me feeling like the shell of who I used to be. It was as if something within me had died and canalising that into my art aided me immensely in reclaiming my power and reminding myself who I am and what I stand for. Through poetry, I found my voice, which I now realise had always been there and never left me. Though initially it was faint as a whisper, now it roars so loud I can even hear it in the spaces between words.

All of these elements brought me to start Artemis and her arrows. Named in honour of the Greek goddess of the hunt, wildlife, chastity and the moon, twin sister to Apollo, and all around badass feminist rebel. This mythological beauty was afraid of nothing and fought fiercely for those in her protection, so fiercely in fact that no one would dare cross her (just ask Actaeon and Agamemnon how that worked out for them).

Artemis had her arrows and I have my words, both are weapons. They can provide relief and serve as a means of protection, just as easily as they can do the opposite.
