Even though we wish it so

As the rain pours down
I smoke and I wonder:
is it soaking my body
or is it soothing my soul?
Drops sprinkle my face
as I sigh and take in the moment,
for in a second
it will be gone.
Minutes--- they run by so quickly
never pausing to say hello.
In such a hurry
they forget to warn us
that the future is now the present
and the present
is steadily
becoming the past.
The hands of time cannot be stopped.
Even though we wish it so.
They lie far from our grasp,
Beyond mortal comprehension.
Where they abide
our pleading echoes do not reach.
They are deaf to our cries
and indifferent to our sorrows.
Hence--- you must take
your life for what it is,
a glimpse of spectacular light
like a falling star
illuminating the sky
but for a moment,
beautiful and bright,
and then it’s gone.
Time will continue to elapse,
just as it always has,
it will not stop for you
nor will it stop for me.
And even though we wish it so,
That’s just mortality.
